When I first heard the term “exigence,” I confused it with purpose, I couldn’t understand the difference between them because I believed they both focused on why you’re writing your paper. However, exigence is more about what made you write the piece in the first place. What situation presented itself that sparked your interest or your need to dive deeper into that subject?

Figure 1 displays the background and needs statement that I provided in my engineering proposal. The background discusses previous attempts at restoring vegetation and the information that indicates why drones would be the more efficient solution. The needs statement addresses how frequently wildfires occur and the outcomes that arise from them. Both of these sections display important factors that sparked the need to utilize drones for restoring vegetation after wildfires.
