Lab Report

A lab report is written to communicate the process taken during a laboratory experiment and its results.

Requirements of a Lab Report:

  • Title
    • Should be able draw the audience’s attention and interest
    • Demonstrates what the lab report will be about
  • Abstract
    • Provides a brief summary of the report
  • Introduction
    • Discusses the hypothesis
    • Discusses previous research that correlates with the study and why it differs from the research that was conducted during the study
    • Introduces unfamiliar terms or concepts that will be utilized throughout the report
  • Materials and Methods
    • Discusses in detail the approach or process that was taken during the experiment
    • Lists the materials that were used in the experiment
  • Results
    • Includes graphs and tables to back up the information being discussed
    • Presents the findings from the study
  • Discussion
    • An analysis of the results
    • Provide whether the previous hypothesis was correct or not
  • Conclusion
    • Provides a summary of the key components that were addressed in the report
  • References
    • Lists the sources in APA style
